DIY costumes that are perfect for students

Let’s be honest, as a student, you’re going to be spending a lot of time at parties – they are an essential aspect of college life, after all! You’re also going to spend plenty of time in costume and fancy dress because this is what a lot of college parties entail (you lucky thing). So, that means you need to get your brain ticking and think about the sorts of costumes you’re going to wear to these events.
Yes, some of the parties will be themed, and that will restrict your choice of costume slightly more. But, for the most part, the majority of parties or events you attend will simply ask you to come in costume and leave the finer details down to you. So, we thought we’d give you some ideas for DIY student costumes – these are options you can put together yourself for minimal effort and cost.

Reservoir Dogs

If you have a group of friends, this would be the ideal choice, as you can all dress up as characters from cult crime flick Reservoir Dogs. All you’ll need is all black suits, ties, and sunglasses. You might want to get labels and write “Mr. White,” “Mr. Blonde,” “Mr. Pink,” and so on, so people know who is who. Or, we think an easier way of doing it would be to wear a tie that denotes which of the gangsters you are. The great thing about this costume choice is that you don’t even really need a costume because you’re wearing a suit, and everyone looks good in a suit.

This is such a basic costume but is actually incredibly effective as well. All you’ll need to do is get a large, rectangular cardboard box. It should be one that is wide enough to fit your head and torso into. Then you cut a hole in one end, as well as cutting a window on the one side. Now you have the skeleton of your phone. Then you cover it in paper and add colored squares of card to represent the apps. You can get detailed with this, or you could even print off large images of each app and stick them on card. This is a really basic and easy costume, and it’s also a pretty unique choice too. It’s a win-win!

Starbucks cup

Another great choice here that is also really basic – go as a takeout cup from your favorite coffee house! All you need to get started is a large Starbucks poster or logo that you can print, and paste it onto some flexible poster paper, and you’re pretty much good to go! If you can also scrawl some unintelligible writing, that’s supposed to be your name, on there as well, that’s an added bonus for authenticity. The great thing about this costume is that you can wear warm clothing underneath, so it’s practical and comfy too.

Audrey Hepburn

This is definitely an easy costume because all ladies have that elegant little black dress. You’re going for the iconic Breakfast At Tiffany’s look, and that means black dress, long black gloves, hair styled into an updo, several pearl necklaces, and a cigarette holder. People will immediately know who you are meant to be, and you won’t have had to put in too much work. You might feel this costume is a little too elegant for the local pub or nightclub, but it would be ideal for a more refined affair.

Hopefully, you’ll take inspiration from some of the ideas we’ve given you here. There are a lot of different choices available to you when it comes to dress up costumes. The best ones to pick are always ones that are easy to make yourself and require little or no money to be able to create. The ones on this list are a great place to start, and we hope you’ll use one of them next time!
