Thinking Of Joining A Sorority or Fraternity? Here's What You Should Know

Joining college comes with a lot of new things. After high school, it’s a completely different experience and you’ll probably be wanting to get the most out of it as you can. Between endless assignments and rushing to classes, college has a lot more to offer. Greek houses are a popular interest with many students joining campus. In fact, every year more than three quarters of a million students join sororities and fraternities in their respective campuses. Majority of students have an idea about what these Greek houses are about, but do you really have the right picture? Movies have had their share in creating a perspective about these houses, but there’s a lot of misleading information that ends up giving a one sided perception into the entire thing.
If you want to belong to a sorority or a fraternity while in campus, a little digging around for information concerning these organizations will have you well prepared and ensure that you end up making the best decision for yourself. So, what should you know about Greek life before taking that pledge? The list below seeks to familiarize your with everything you should know.

It requires time

In college, time could as well be termed as the rarest commodity around. For students, there’s just barely enough time for all the classes, assignments, getting ready for tests and at the same time keeping up with the social life around campus. Joining a Greek house will leave you with even less time. Be prepared to have very little free time on your hands. Sororities and fraternities have a lot of events going on every other semester that will require your participation, some of them mandatory. If you want to be part of this, make sure you bring your best time manager version of yourself.

It’s costly

Fees, dues and financial obligations are as much a part of Greek houses as of any other organization. Every chapter in a campus is affiliated to a National organization, so there’s the fees that go towards this, including insurance. Then you’ll have to pay for the events taking place within the school year. If your house is a frequent party thrower, then be prepared to pay even more cash. There’s also the issue of paying for those t-shirts that are made for almost every other occasion or event that comes along. While counting your college costs, make sure you can handle the cost of being in any of these houses. A little background check will enable you to chose one that’s friendly to your pocket.

It’s a team thing

If you’re a lone ranger, joining one of these houses is probably not the best way to go around spending your college life. Being in a Greek house requires working with others for common causes. Collaborative effort and contribution of every member is required. Being a part of this will prove helpful in sharpening your social skills and get you ready for the outside workplace as you’ll already have known how to be a great team player.

It’s not all about partying

Contrary to what most films depict, sororities and fraternities do not exist to just throw wild parties every other weekend. While there are some houses which might be popular for the parties they throw, this is not the only thing that goes on. Activities such as community projects and volunteering are part of the package, alongside other many events.
Each house has something different to offer, so be sure to do your research to decide which one suits you best.
