The most popular sororities out there

When it comes to your college experience, one thing that can make or break it is joining a sorority. A sorority determines the people who will become your family for the next few years (and beyond!), the parties you go to, the extracurriculars you take part in, and the adventures you have. There are 26 sororities to choose from (although not all at each school, of course), and here are the most popular ones.

The most popular sororities out there

Chi Omega

Chi Omega has a whopping 345,000 initiated members across 180 college chapters and 243 alumnae chapters, not to mention some pretty famous faces such as Charlie’s Angel Lucy Liu and 80s/90s acting legend Sela Ward. Chi Omega is one of the ‘Seven Sisters’ sororities, a group that is said to hold the most power, the most substantial national reputation, and also the most important connections. They state that their values include things such as friendship, intellectual pursuits, campus involvement, and service to others, among other things.

Kappa Alpha Theta

Sometimes referred to as simply ‘Theta’, this sorority is actually the first-ever Greek-letter fraternity for women and was founded back in 1870. It also boasts other ‘firsts’ such as being the first Greek organization established at four Ivy League schools and the first women’s fraternity to have a chapter in Canada. It now has over 147 college chapters across the US and Canada and more than 212 alumnae chapters. Theta is all about leading women, supporting women, and making a difference. So, if those are important values to you, you might want to become a Theta!

Alpha Omicron Pi

Established in 1987 at Barnard College, Alpha Omicron Pi is also often referred to as Alpha O or A-O-Pi, by the more than 191,000 members! These members are spread across over 212 chapters in both the United States and Canada, and the sorority is open to any woman, irrespective of her religion, ethnicity, or socio-economic upbringing. Alpha O is all about love, character, and dignity, as well as putting a big focus on loyalty to the college – in fact, there are rules to ensure that no members ever sacrifice the interests of the college just for prestige or advancing the fraternity. The group is also very passionate about philanthropy and serving the whole world in general, and since 1967, they have partnered with the Arthritis Foundation as one of their biggest charity focuses.

Alpha Kappa Alpha

AKA is the first sorority founded by Africa-American women and it was established at Howard University in 1908. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength and now has more than 300,000 members across 1024 – not only in the US but in several other countries, too! AKA women are passionate about helping alleviate problems that affect women and girls, lobbying congress to make changes in legislation and working in the community to improve social and economic conditions for others.
With these sororities, it’s important to remember that they can be quite selective with membership, and this isn’t always a good thing. You might not get into one of the most popular sororities, and that’s okay, because it’s about what’s the best fit for you, and there will be a sorority that is full of people that you’ll love. Just because it’s popular, doesn’t necessarily make it the best.
