Uncovering the secrets of the Sphinx

Egypt is one of the most fascinating countries in the world, and it’s fair to say that it’s overflowing with culture and history. As the home of pyramids, pharaohs, papyrus, and the famous River Nile, tourists flock to Egypt every year to see this little slice of ancient history for themselves. Perhaps one of the most iconic attractions of them all is the Great Sphinx of Giza. With the head of a human and the body of a lion, this structure is truly something special. But how much do you really know about the Sphinx?

When you spot this iconic structure in the Egyptian desert, you immediately know it’s a Sphinx. But what if you told you it wasn’t technically a Sphinx?

The classic Ancient Greek depiction of this creature is one that has the wings of a bird, the head of a woman, and the body of a lion. Of course, the Sphinx in Giza does not have any wings and has the head of a man. Because of this, it should really be called an androsphinx – but that just doesn’t seem to have caught on.
